We were out on a boat on the Nile when we came across this enormous colony of bee-eaters nesting in the riverbank.
There were birds flying around everywhere, but what really caught my attention was the sheer number of holes.
Look at the bloody thing!
Hundreds of little entrances, all looking remarkably similar to me.
And there, amongst all those holes, was this one little bee-eater.
I couldn’t help wondering…
“Bugger, which one’s mine?”
Obviously, the birds have a better idea of where they live than I would. I’d probably spend half the afternoon knocking on the neighbours’ doors.
What I love about this photograph is that it isn’t really about one bird. It’s about the extraordinary little world these birds have created along the riverbank.
Sometimes you’ve got to stop looking for the perfect close-up and just take in what’s happening around you.
