A pair of Sri Lanka frogmouths roosting closely together among rainforest branches
Sinharaja Rainforest · Sri Lanka

We were walking through the forest when our guide mentioned that a pair of Sri Lanka frogmouths often roosted nearby.

We were in luck. There they were, tucked tightly together among the branches, apparently fast asleep.

Well, sort of.

Their eyes were open, and they seemed to have just enough awareness of the world to know what was going on without feeling the need to do anything about it.

A bit like me on a quiet afternoon, really.

It was a wonderful opportunity to photograph these extraordinary birds behaving naturally. And just as importantly, to do so without disturbing them.

I could have spent ages adjusting settings, checking angles and trying for that technically perfect photograph.

But sometimes the situation is already perfect.

Two birds, nestled together in their rainforest home, looking as though they’d rather the rest of the world just went away.

I raised the camera, took my photograph and left them to it.

Sorry for the interruption, you two. Sleep tight.
