Wildebeest and an acacia tree silhouetted against a brilliant orange African sunset in Naboisho Conservancy, Kenya
Naboisho Conservancy · Kenya

We were heading back from an afternoon safari drive when the setting sun started showing off.

With colours like that, it was practically demanding to be photographed.

The animals were going about their business, silhouetted against an extraordinary orange sky, while one seemed to have stopped to take a look at us.

It was a wonderful opportunity to experiment with colour, light and shadow. The silhouettes made the composition surprisingly straightforward.

No great wildlife drama. No complicated story.

Just the end of another afternoon in Africa, when everything seemed to fall into place.

Sometimes the light does all the hard work.
