An Australasian darter drying its outstretched wings on a grassy bank while a duck rests nearby at Big Swamp, Bunbury
Big Swamp · Bunbury, Western Australia

One of my favourite things to do is simply wander around a wetland and see what’s happening.

Big Swamp in Bunbury is a wonderful place for that. Plenty of different bird species, all going about their daily business.

On this particular wander, I spotted a darter with its wings spread wide, making the most of the sunshine.

Nothing particularly unusual. Darters are quite fond of airing their wings.

But look a little closer.

Tucked away on the same grassy bank was a duck, apparently having a lovely snooze.

Two birds sharing the same little patch of wetland, each with a rather different idea of how to spend the afternoon.

I’ve taken plenty of close-up photographs of darters and cormorants over the years. But looking back, I rather like this one because it shows the whole scene.

One hanging out the washing. The other having forty winks.

Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, really.
