Large spider holding a captured dragonfly in its web

Marc’s Treehouse Lodge, South Africa

We were having breakfast, getting ready to head off on a safari drive, when something caught my eye beneath the deck beside the lake.

Spiders. Quite a few of them, actually, sitting in their webs.

And one of them appeared to have breakfast well and truly sorted!

A rather unfortunate dragonfly had ended up on the menu.

I didn’t see the actual capture, but watching this spider with its prize was fascinating.

There we were, preparing to head out into the African bush looking for wildlife, and a little wildlife drama was happening practically underneath our breakfast table.

I suppose that’s one of the things I love about being out in nature. You never quite know what you’re going to come across.

Sometimes you don’t even need to leave the breakfast table.

Although I suspect the dragonfly might have preferred a different restaurant.
