Family of African elephants with young calves entering the water together

Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

We were out on a boat when I spotted a family of elephants making their way through the undergrowth towards the water.

One of the larger elephants seemed to be leading the way. The matriarch, perhaps, although I wouldn’t swear to it.

The others followed close behind, with the little ones tucked amongst them. There was no sign of alarm or urgency. Just a family moving together, the youngsters surrounded by the reassuring presence of the bigger elephants.

And then came the fun!

Once they reached the water, the little ones got on with the important business of splashing about.

Kids, eh? Doesn’t seem to matter how many legs they’ve got.

What I particularly enjoyed was watching the whole thing unfold. From the family making its way through the bushes to the little ones having a wonderful time in the water.

And there they were, all together.

Sometimes it’s those ordinary family moments that make the best photographs.

Even when the family members weigh a few tonnes!
