A small green chameleon carefully crossing a road in Kruger National Park, South Africa, with its tail raised high
Kruger National Park · South Africa

We were driving along in Kruger when our eagle-eyed guide spotted this little fellow crossing the road.

Anchors on.

And for a while, the safari became entirely about a tiny chameleon making its way from one side to the other.

He looked wonderfully purposeful, as though he had somewhere important to be. But what followed was less direct than his determination suggested.

One step forward … pause … hover … two steps back.

No wonder it takes them so long to cross the road.

I wasn’t complaining. It gave me extra time to watch the lovely little character and enjoy the whole performance.

This photograph was followed by a video, which showed the actual process of how they walk. And honestly, it was hilarious.

For all that careful concentration, progress seemed optional.

But that was part of the charm. He wasn’t in a hurry, and for a few minutes neither were we.

Sometimes the smallest road users create the biggest hold-ups.
