One of the joys of staying in a nature reserve is that the wildlife doesn’t recognise the boundaries of your accommodation.
Animals wander in and out as they please, going about their business while we humans rush around doing whatever it is we think is so important.
These two vervet monkeys had found themselves a comfortable spot on a tree stump and seemed perfectly content to watch the world go by.
Mum was keeping an eye on things, while the youngster peered out from behind her arm, tiny fingers gripping tightly, those enormous eyes taking everything in.
No drama. No frantic activity. Just a quiet moment together.
I couldn’t help wondering what they were thinking as they watched us.
“Look at those funny monkeys with clothes on. Always rushing around. What’s the hurry?”
And perhaps they had a point.
We were the visitors, after all. They were perfectly at home.
Sometimes it’s worth remembering we’re not always the ones doing the watching.
